Step By Step Guide to Respite Care

Are you considering placing your loved one into respite care but are unsure where to start? We have created a simple step by step process to assist you with organising respite care. Respite care is short term care accommodation, usually booked for a few weeks at a time. There are many reasons that you might consider respite care.  You may wish to take a break, have a holiday booked, or your loved one might need some recovery time after being unwell or in hospital.  There may also be an emergency situation where your loved one requires care at short notice. If this is the case many residential care homes have respite places for emergency situations. At HillView we offer temporary respite care accommodation in our residential and memory care at both our Ashmore and Merrimac Communities. In addition we offer respite in our Secure Memory Care Unit at our Merrimac community (subject to availability).

It is important to plan ahead if you have a trip planned for specific dates.  Then you should ensure that you loved one has approval and has been assessed by the aged care assessment team. You will need to provide this information prior to admission.

  1. Assessment:

Has your loved one been assessed? It is a requirement that you have a My Aged Care assessment to receive government funding for respite care services. Once you have contacted My Aged Care you will then be referred to the Aged Care Assessment Team.  The team will assess you to identify yours or your loved ones care needs. They will then put approvals in place for you to access respite care.

If you have already been assessed you need to check that the correct approvals are in place. For more information on booking an assessment call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or see the link below.

  1. Accommodation Features:

Make a list of features you would like for yours or your loved ones respite stay. It is important your loved one feels comfortable in their respite environment. 1. Residential Aged Care Homes:

Make a list of Residential Aged Care homes in the area where you may wish to book in for respite care.  Call to enquire about their respite vacancies.  Make a short list and book a tour before you make your final decision. Ensure you have yours or your loved ones Aged Care Client Record (ACCR) on hand.  You will need to provide a copy of this along with a copy of the Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) document.

  1. Book your preferred Residential Aged Care home.

When you book your loved ones respite stay the admissions team will provide you with all the information you need to ensure everything is organised for the respite stay.
